⛏️ 🌞Sittard – Garzweiler – Bergen

8 July 2023

The temperatures were brutal yesterday. I went to see the Garzweiler surface mine and one of the surrounding villages that were planned to be removed (Holzweiler). From there I cycled towards the Maas, crossing the border in Arcen. I was too late for the ferry in Druten and made a detour over the Ewijk bridge. Then the sun came out from behind the clouds and I choose to scratch, taking the train back home in Rhenen instead of cycling another 50km like I had originally planned. Sitting in the air conditioned train was a welcome bonus! 😁 😺

(2/2) Heinsberg is unfortunately known for being the first Corona hotspot in Germany.

I told Mr. Goat that sorry, I have nothing for him. He enthusiastically started licking the salty sweat from my handlebars.

Just outside of Baal I continued on the road to Erkelenz.

Heading back. The dark blue colour notifies this sign is at least 30 years old.

St. Cosmas und Damian church in Holzweiler. In 2014 this town was saved from being demolished for the mine.

A field just outside of Berverath. On (or rather beneath) the horizon two church towers: my guess is the left one to be St. Servatius in Kückhoven, the right one St. Lambertus in Erkelenz.

Just before Rennekoven. The church is St. Maria Helferin der Christen in Dornbusch.

The Joannus windmill in Heumen. I did not find the reason for its colourful wrapping.
